Remembering Sasa Klass

On March 6, 2021, social media buzzed with the saddening announcement of the death of Sarona Sasa Klass Motlhagodi. Miss Hip Hop, as she was affectionately known died in a helicopter crash around the Central Kalahari Game Reserve.

The country’s favourite female rapper is being highly celebrated across the country by her followers and fellow musicians. The 27 year old Mmamongwato hit maker was a very talented artist who lived her life shamelessly. Indeed the Botswana music and arts industry has suffered a massive loss of talent.

ORBITUARY

Sarona Motlhagodi was born to Anna and Shyne Motlhagodi in 1993, Gaborone. She went to pre-school at Gaborone Montessori School and Rainbow Primary School to do her reception and standard 1. The family moved to Lobatse, where she continued at Crescent School from standard 2 up to standard 7.

She continued to Rainbow Secondary School until she completed form 4. Thereafter, she continued her education in South Africa. After completing matric she was admitted to Limkokwing University of Creative Technology to pursue a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Digital Film and Television in May 2011. She was appointed the University Ambassador.

Sasa then decided to end her studies in pursuit of her music career full time. She went on to become a television presenter on eBotswana. As she progressed in the music industry, she developed a solo project which she also turned into a clothing line, HADSAN.

Sasa was felt in the music industry when she released her hit single with Scar “A ke mo Khandeng”. In 2015 she released “Mmamongwato” under Virgin Brew label. Her star continued to shine as she shared the stage with the likes of Rick Ross, HHP, Khuli Chana as well as Samantha Mogwe, Oats and Dona amongst many others.

In 2019 she relocated to South Africa where she co-hosted “Highly Inappropriate” with Phat Joe on Dstv. In 2020 she returned home and continued to work on some collaborations.With multitudes of fans, Sasa was a world class performer who gave her all to the Arts. Her fans the ‘Klass mates’, will remember her resilence and ability to stand for herself.
