At just 23 years old, Adrian Mthabisi Tshabangu, better known as DJ African Swiss, is already making waves in the music industry. Hailing from Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, this young DJ’s journey is a testament to passion, perseverance, and the power of following one’s dreams.
Adrian’s love affair with DJ-ing began at the tender age of 12 when he was introduced to the art form by his brother and his friends. Despite initially being denied formal training due to his age and the importance of education, Adrian’s determination only grew stronger. He made it a point to shadow his brother at every gig, soaking in the atmosphere and honing his skills behind the decks.
It wasn’t long before Adrian’s talent began to shine. During his A-level studies, he took the initiative to procure a PA system for his school, allowing him to showcase his DJing skills at various events. Despite facing opposition from his parents, who prioritized his academic pursuits, Adrian’s passion for music remained unwavering. Weekend gigs became a regular occurrence, and he seized every opportunity to perfect his craft.
As Adrian’s confidence grew, he encountered a common obstacle among performers: stage fright. Despite his nerves, the audience responded positively to his sets, fueling his determination to improve. Drawing inspiration from his birth date, which coincides with Africa Day, Adrian adopted the moniker “DJ African Swiss,” blending his African heritage with a nod to his close-knit circle of friends.
Adrian’s versatility sets him apart in the competitive DJ scene. Capable of seamlessly transitioning between three genres in a single set, he adapts his music to suit the environment and audience. His deep appreciation for African culture and music serves as a driving force behind his creativity, allowing him to connect with audiences on a profound level.
While Adrian’s brother provided the initial guidance in DJing, much of his journey has been a solo endeavor. Overcoming challenges such as navigating the music industry’s pitfalls and struggling to monetize his skills, Adrian sought to stand out from the crowd. Recognizing the need for strategic partnerships, he joined forces with Leago Mogano, founder of Swervo Visuals / Swervo Media Group, to elevate his brand and secure lucrative bookings.
Despite facing hurdles like playing for minimal compensation, lacking access to equipment for practice, and grappling with the ever-evolving music landscape, Adrian remains undeterred. His commitment to his craft and his unwavering belief that DJing is ingrained in his DNA drive him forward.
As he continues to carve out his place in the industry, Adrian is guided by his passion for music and a desire to leave a lasting impact. With his sights set on the future, he navigates the challenges with determination, knowing that every obstacle is an opportunity for growth. For DJ African Swiss, the journey is just beginning, and the rhythm of success beats within his soul.
