Coping With Depression Amidst the COVID 19 Pandemic
Mental health plays a vital role in our overall health, however, ever since the pandemic, our mental health has been greatly affected. Most people suffer from depression now and it is at it`s highest peak. The rate at which people are being affected by it has tripled worldwide.
Depression is a mood disorder that causes persistent feelings of sadness and loss of interest. It affects how we feel and relate with others on a daily basis. It causes intense feelings of sadness and withdrawal. It can cause one to resort to suicide. That is how serious it is. Depression, especially in our African society has always been taken for granted as well as many other mental issues. It has always been stigmatized but this illness can hit just about anyone. It doesn’t matter where you come from or who you are.
In this pandemic, it has become a serious concern because many people have lost their jobs, their homes, their finances and they have been major changes in employment. There are also issues of social distancing which may leave one feeling lonely leaving room for depression. We are dealing with so many unprecedented uncertainties, social isolation and a profound sense of loss. However, there are a number of thing in which one can cope during this drastic time.
HOW TO COPE
If you have been prescribed medication for the depression, please make sure you take it as required and only stop when the Doctor instructs you to do so.
During social distancing, you can still maintain social connections. Phone calls and videos can help you and your loved ones to feel socially connected, less lonely or isolated.
Take a break from the news
Exercise
Get enough sleep.
Avoid excessive alcohol and drug use.
Make time to Unwind and get out and take a walk.
Connect with your community or faith based organization.
Do things that make you feel good, energize and even relax you.
Eat healthy, depression-fighting diets not foods that adversely affect your brain and mood like Trans fats caffeine.
Most importantly when you are experiencing such feelings, talk to your loved ones.
