He is a young but very ambitious artist aged 19 years and hails from Mmadinare. He currently resides in Gaborone where he has been building up a very promising music career. He started the business the moment he finished his form five and has so far released three singles which have all been doing exceptionally well and hitting the waves. He had a talk with us recently.
Who is Kaey Maxx?
A hip-hop and RnB artist who specializes in making feel good music, music that can put a smile on your face.
What is the inspiration of this name?
My real names are Kagiso Monna so I just took the Kaey from Kagiso and the Maxx from Monna, instead of Mann I used Maxx. I chose Maxx because everything I do, I keep it at a maximum, I never do things without putting all my effort no matter what it is.
Is music something you grew up with?
I would say I grew up with music because it has been my passion since way back. I used to be a dancer as well. From primary school I was just a fan of listening to music, in 2016 I started making one.
Why are you doing music, and why specifically that genre?
I’m somebody who likes expressing my feelings on a paper. I used to be more into drawing happy people and as time went by I started feeling like it wasn’t really enough and people didn’t really get me. So then I started jotting down a few bars here and there until I managed to come up with a solid verse containing all my feelings. I didn’t just wake up and choose hip hop, somebody made me love the genre while I was drawing and listening to him.
As a hip hop and RnB artist, who has been your inspiration in making your music?
South Africa’s very own, Nasty C, has and will always be my inspiration. I learnt a lot from just listening to him.
You are a young and an upcoming artist, how do you handle this music business?
It’s not really easy being an upcoming artist because most of the times doors are slammed on my face. Even though I face that, nothing is stopping from following my plan. Whenever I feel like giving up I think about why I started this and when it comes to the real business. I keep it very professional. As long as you know what you’re doing and why you’re doing that, it won’t be too much to handle.
Is your music reaching out to where you want it to?
My music might not be in everyone’s ears but the little that I’ve managed to reach so far I really appreciate it and it shows that very soon it’s going to reach its final destination.
Introspecting your work where it is now, are you pleased with it?
Ever since I got into the industry, I archived a lot with only three songs. My first song playing on radio, my second one on newspapers and my third one in magazines is something I should really be grateful about. So I won’t hesitate to say yes I’m pleased with my work. It might not be enough but it’s something I should smile about.
Have you collaborated with any renowned local artists?
I have already worked with a few local artists in Botswana. The likes of Courtney Maroba, KOR, Crust E and right now I’m working on a hit song with TSS.
Whom would you like to collaborate with?
Nasty C, Sal Angel, CYC JOUZY, ATI, Go Hard clothing bw, Mpho Sebina, FME DJs, Costa Titch and many more creatives.
As an artist, what gives you inspiration when making your music?
I look at what I’m doing and why I’m doing that. That inspires me to go harder on what I’m working on as it acts as a reminder and guidance. Most of the inspiration comes from my heart.
Tell me more about your achievements that you stand proud of.
I managed to archive a lot with just a few songs and a lot of hard work. I got featured on Yarona FM by Dj Sway, my work got recognized by Fella-The-Beat, Flyboi Que and Yung Amaze DG, I got featured on a song from USA and SA, got the opportunity to be interviewed by Mmegi, The Midweek Sun and Africa’s Very Own Magazine, I also got a feature on SA Hip Hop and Botswana Hip Hop Language Facebook pages. The list goes on.
