A TRENDSETTER OF NOTE
A trendsetter of note. His birth name is Katlego Moeletsi: popularly known as Man of Class. He is that one gentleman of repute, who is forever presentable. He is possessed by his fondness to maintain that exquisite look. He’s not ready to improvise. His taste of fashionable outfits is second to none. Wherever he goes…heads turn like nobody’s business. He is jeered with gazes of all sorts from a score of his admirers. He leaves passers-by dumbfound and utterly speechless.
A traveling fanatic who gets his inspiration, love and hunger for fashion through his expeditions. He stated that fashion gave him the opportunities to meet so many people of different backgrounds. He gained valuable experience from his real life- encounters with those people; and he pieced together stories which played a key part in his self-development as he learnt a lot from them. One of his favourite part of being a fashion designer, is his incredible thinking capacity. He reiterated that, “I’m somebody who doesn’t copy or follow trends, rather I create them.” He stressed out that what is needed as fashion designer; that you need to have your own unique style. He is also someone who believes in coupling planning, with producing and selling.
The designs you created are undoubtedly good enough, whom do you get your inspiration from while creating such designs?
“I got inspiration from South African man called Linda Makhanya, whom I followed for some time to observe his style; that’s when I told myself that if this man can do this, even I can do my own styles and indeed it’s worked for me big time.”
How do you stay up to date regarding fashion?
“There are many different ways to glimpse the current trends and stay up to date with your wardrobe, sometimes I read magazines, and I watch television to see what people are wearing on the street; and that’s where I scoop some ideas of what is happening.”
How would you describe your personal style?
“It is our spirit and what we think, our creativity; again, our individual way of being, and our intention for our clothes. Oftentimes, personal style is thought to be for people who are extremely fashion-conscious; while in reality, clothing affects everyone.”
How would you relate past and present fashion trends?
“Fashion trends are constantly changing along with modern times, that range from tacky to sophisticated; or to just plain and simple looks. Each new generation creates its own style, often by imitating trends from the past decades and modifying them. Trends fades out of style, and then come back; sometimes it’s even hard to keep track of what is trending. Taking a look back to the 1980s, the style then was very similar to what is popular now. Leggings, oversized sweatshirts, ripped jeans and many more trends have come back into style.”
Define fashion:
“Fashion is alluding to the way in which things are made; fashion is to make something particular. Most commonly, fashion is a prevailing style of dress or behaviour at any given time, and fashion is characterized by change.”
What do you think about work ethics, and what kind of ethics you believe in while working in the fashion industry?
“Encouraging customers to shop sustainably can be a real challenge, but believe me that is key. We are all used to getting the clothes we want easily, cheaply, and quickly. I believe as professionals we have an obligation to educate our customers on consumer-buying behaviour, so that they can use their monies wisely.”
According to you, what’s your favourite part about being a fashion designer?
“It gives you opportunity to step outside of your comfort zone, and if you’re the kind of person who enjoys a challenge treading an unknown path; or requires a certain amount of pressure in order for your performance to show-up and excel- the fashion industry provides the ideal environment for you to thrive. With trends rotating and fading in and out of fashion, the industry is ever changing. Hence, as part of your readiness plan in this industry, you need to be prepared for that constant change. That’s why I decided to choose fashion.”
