A Queen in the Making
Violet Modise is a young motivated and independent model with aspirations of starting her own agencies. The 21 year old commonly known by the name Ms HaZey says she grew up as a shy girl who hardly had friends since she and her family used to travel a lot. The travelling made her appreciate different cultures in the country.
In 2019 the Mahalapye native ventured into modelling as it was something she had always wanted to venture into and inspire other young girls out there. She researched about agencies and went on to strike a deal with one agency which a friend referred her to. She worked with the agency by doing photo-shoots and modelling for three months there. She would later on part ways with the agency and went on to another agency until she finally decided to run solo last year.
As a model, how is the career’s financial stability?
Modelling in this country is really not something to solely rely on financially because of the time frame between the gigs as you can go a month or two without any shows.
Whom do you look up to?
I would say I have a few people I look up to because they inspire me to be happy in my own skin, to love and embrace who I am as an individual and a model, to showcase the true me and not try to be like someone else. These are people like Kaone Kario, Naomi Campbell and a local model who is a close friend of mine Douglas Keokgale.
What are your aspirations in this modelling field?
To be a well-known model locally and internationally, to show young girls and boys that to be a model you don’t have to change who you are, to continue serving the community and hopefully one day achieve my childhood dream of becoming Miss World and walking down Victoria Secret Ramp.
How is the modelling industry in Botswana doing?
The modelling industry in Botswana is or was just starting to bloom but because of the pandemic I would say at this point it’s at rock-bottom.
As many have had so much effect due to Covid-19, would you say the modelling industry is badly hit and how?
Yes, the modelling industry was hugely affected by the pandemic as no gatherings of more than two people are allowed, which means there are no working platforms for models such as fashion shows. As it is, I would say the modelling industry is on a shutdown but at the same time it’s a good time for models and managers to reflect on themselves and work on improving their weaknesses.
Personally how has it affected you?
I would say the pandemic has had a negative impact on me as my modelling career was about to grow but due to it, everything got cancelled which ruined the year plans and along with putting my career on hold.
Since we are in a new year, has it been any different for you?
It’s a new year and so far there hasn’t been any difference but hopefully as the year progresses it would be productive.
What are your future endeavours and aspirations?
I would say my future activities for the year 2021 will actually be on myself, my weaknesses, continuing with community service, trying out for any gigs that pop up and most importantly teach young children in the community how to be bold, beautiful and brave in their own skin.
