Dancing helped her understand rhythm and timing, further enhancing her artistic skills. One of the pivotal moments in her childhood was when she moved to live with her grandmother in 1998, at the age of six. It was here that she gained full access to television, which exposed her to a world of endless possibilities. Watching her favorite shows, seeing performers on stage singing and dancing, ignited her desire to pursue music as a career. What struck her most was seeing Black artists like Brenda Fassie, Boom Shaka, and Yvonne Chakachaka excelling in the industry. “Seeing Black women succeed made me realize my dreams were valid. I could achieve the same,” she reflects.

Unlike many artists who opt for stage names, she chose to keep her birth name, explaining, “Baratwa represents love. Love is God, and it’s a daily reminder of how loved I am by both God and my people.” Her name became a symbol of everything she stands for—love, faith, and the belief in one’s worth.

It tested my skills, boosted my confidence, and allowed me to connect with a larger audience,” she recalls.
However, the journey has not been without its challenges. Like many independent artists, Baratwa has faced the difficulty of securing funds for music and video production. Booking performances and ensuring payment for her work has also been an ongoing struggle. Despite these hurdles, she remains determined, pushing through with a relentless drive and a passion that fuels her creativity. “I stay dedicated, always seeking new opportunities and letting my passion guide me forward,” she says.
Baratwa describes her sound as pop music, though it is far from the typical definition of the genre. Her music is a blend of various styles, including rock, R&B, and even rap, making her sound distinct and appealing to a broad audience.
